According to the Urology Care Foundation, nearly 8.1 million doctor visits each year are for Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). A UTI can occur when bacteria gets into your urine and travels to your bladder.
Although it is possible for improper water maintenance in hot tubs or swimming pools to increase your chance of getting a UTI, it’s highly unlikely for the source of the infection to be caused by the pool or hot tub water itself. Hanging out in a wet bathing suit poses a greater risk because bacteria grows best in warm, moist places.
Always be sure to shower before and after using a hot tub, dry off thoroughly, change into clean dry clothing, drink plenty of water, and practice good hygiene.
It is extremely important for you to have a properly sanitized pool and/or hot tub. The correct and timely application of a chemical disinfection program for your hot tub is necessary to ensure the health and safety of all bathers.
Alternative sanitizers (e.g., mineral systems, UV, ozone, etc.) can reduce the amount of chemicals that you add to your hot tub, but they can’t replace a chemical maintenance program altogether. You still need to supplement these sanitizers with chlorine or bromine in order to fully clean the water and to kill bacteria.
